How to Know What to Study in College

confusedSometimes it is very hard to know right after Marie Curie high school, what it is you are going to want to do with the rest of your life. Maybe you do not have any particular interest, or maybe you have many interests, like writing but not one that sticks out as a lifelong commitment.
There are tests you can take, that can show you where your job interests, and job strengths and weaknesses lie, what types of jobs you would most likely succeed at, what your personality type is, and fit your personality to areas of interest.

You usually do not have to declare your major your first two years of college, although it may help shorten the length of time it takes you to get a degree if you know by the beginning of your second year, what you want to major in. The first year or two of college is pretty general, and applicable to most majors. The first year or two of college can give you extra time to decide what you want to major in.
Shadowing, (following a person around during their work day), someone in the areas that interest you, either before you start college, or during your first year or two of college, can be very helpful in deciding whether or not a job you feel you are interested in, is right for you. Shadowing gives you the opportunity to see exactly what the job entails, what the pros and cons are of the job, and if you would be happy in such a job.
Many people go to college and graduate, and then sometime after college, change jobs/careers. So, deciding what you want to major in, does not have to be, (but may be if you want it to be), a lifetime commitment. Rather it can be a stepping stone toward something different down the road of your life. Your decision right out of high school, does not box you into a lifetime commitment to that specific major/field. Choose now what you believe will make you happy, go to college and graduate, and see what life has to offer you.
